Is Laser-Cutting Sustainable?

Laser-cutting has become a vital aspect of the manufacturing process and is being utilized by more companies every year. Compared to traditional metal-cutting techniques, laser-cutting is a much more sustainable method. Laser-cutting with Edge Metalworks has a few environmental benefits, including energy efficiency and reduced material waste. Below, we’ll explain how our laser-cutting services are environmentally sustainable.

Fiber Lasers are Energy Efficient

Fiber lasers consume less energy than CO2 systems and traditional cutting methods. Fiber lasers convert electrical energy into focused light energy, but a CO2 system would need more electrical power, using up more energy. Our fiber lasers can cut metal faster, more accurately, and have less energy loss in the creation of the concentrated light beam. This efficiency means faster production times and less energy consumption, which makes for more cost-effective parts.  Fiber lasers are able to maximize cutting power while reducing energy consumption much better than traditional cutting methods.

TRUMPF TruLasers

We use TRUMPF TruLasers, which use fiber optic technology to cut metal. This top-of-the-line equipment can cut parts to your exact specifications for a wide variety of metals. We use a TRUMPF TruLaser Tube 7000 for our laser tube cutting, and three TRUMPF TruLaser 3030’s, a TRUMPF TruLaser 3040, and a TRUMPF TruLaser 5030 for our sheet metal cutting. These lasers help us fulfil your production needs faster and more accurately than a machine-cutting shop would.

Less Material Waste

Precision technology and fine tolerances in laser cutting provide few offcuts, reducing material waste. The lasers are controlled by CAD with advanced nesting software to give accurate pieces with minimal excess scrap material.  With the added benefit of our in-house CAD engineers, we can help design parts for greater cutting efficiency and less waste. The raw material will be used effectively, with few mistakes in production, for more sustainable manufacturing that reduces the need for secondary processing. With little material waste, you’ll lower your production costs.

More Recycling

With precision technology, the few offcuts and scrap metal generated are often in good condition. Any scrap metal generated can be recycled at a facility or reused for other projects. Steel and aluminum specifically can be recycled. This puts any material waste to good use, reduces demand for new raw materials, and reduces your carbon footprint.

Lower Emissions

Fiber laser cutters emit fewer gases, fumes, and emissions into the atmosphere than traditional cutting methods. Laser-cutting doesn’t use as many consumables, like oils and coolants. It’s a dry process, reducing water consumption and carbon emissions. Fumes are easily managed with laser-cutting due to the built-in air filtration incorporated directly into the machine. With improved air quality in the workshop, there’s a cleaner working environment. By going with a laser-cutting company like Edge Metalworks, you’ll be able to significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions.
